Common questions
A station is wrong. What can I do?
Tap “Report a problem” on the detail screen. The app opens OpenStreetMap at exactly that spot, where you describe what is wrong. Volunteers review the note and fix the entry for everyone. The correction reaches Camper Service with the next app update.
What does “likely” mean?
The data does not name it explicitly. The estimate follows from what the entry is recorded as — a dump station without any cassette information, for example — not from a confirmation. The app shows every feature in one of four states:
- Yes confirmed in the data
- Likely a reasoned estimate, not a confirmation
- No ruled out in the data
- Unknown the data says nothing about it
How up to date is the data?
The data set ships with the app and is renewed with every app update. The Info tab shows which version you have. Each entry also shows when it was last edited or checked on site. Things can still have changed on the ground: a station may be closed, out of order or no longer free.
Why does the app need my location?
To work out the distance and direction to the nearest station. The app only requests your location while you are using it and never uploads it. Without location access you can still use the map, but the Nearby list stays empty. You can change access under Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camper Service.
The direction arrow is missing.
The compass has no signal. Hold your iPhone upright or drive a little — then the arrow appears. Ahead needs movement too, because the direction of travel comes from the GPS course. When you are standing still, Near searches all around you.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. The list, direction arrow, filters and details all come from your device. Only the map tiles and operators’ websites need a connection. Navigation is handled by the app you hand the destination to — whether it works offline depends on its own offline maps.
Which devices are supported?
Camper Service is available for iPhone, with iOS 17 or later.

How the data set is built
- Source: the OpenStreetMap extract for Europe, obtained from Geofabrik. Its date is shown in the app as the data version.

Selection: objects tagged
amenity=sanitary_dump_stationoramenity=water_point, plus other objects, such as campsites, taggedsanitary_dump_station=yes,public,customersorpermissive. Motorhome sites (tourism=caravan_site) are added to link stations to a site. Stations and water points taggedaccess=privateoraccess=noare dropped. - Merging: stations less than 10 m apart become one entry. A station on a motorhome site or campsite is linked to that site and takes over its details, such as access, website and phone, where it has none of its own. A site with a dump point merges into the station located on it; without one, the site becomes an entry itself. Water points within 30 m of a station or site count as its fresh water; those further away remain separate entries.
- Estimates: a station without information on grey water or cassette counts as “likely” for those; a site without information counts as “likely” for the cassette. Missing information never becomes “no”.
- Place and country: the country comes from Geofabrik’s country polygons, the place shown from the nearest city, town or village within 15 km.
